    Regent Hotels & Resorts
    Regent Hotels & Resorts is an iconic name in the global hospitality industry. Regent was founded in the 1970s by Robert H. Burns, who with the help of other famed hoteliers made it the world’s most admired luxury hotel brand. It was the first to introduce the 5-fixture bathroom and the villa resort concept, which have since become worldwide luxury hotel standards. Regent was also the first truly Asia-based global hospitality group in an industry that had previously been dominated by European and American brands.

    In June 2010, Formosa International Hotels Corporation acquired the Regent brand from Carlson Group. The acquisition included the sale of the global Regent brand and all associated intellectual property, the hotel management and lease contracts for properties in operation and under development, and the Caribbean-based Regent Seven Seas Cruises license. Regent currently operates in Beijing, Berlin, Singapore, Taipei, Porto Montenegro.

    The acquisition of the Regent brand not only makes FIH Regent Group the first Taiwanese company to own an international luxury hotel brand, but also falls in line with the Taiwanese government’s Tourism Pilot Program, which aims to promote Taiwan’s development and international status.

    Taipei, Taiwan – October 24, 2011 – Regent Hotels & Resorts celebrates brand-wide recognition in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2011 Reader’s Choice Awards.

    Highly discerning readers of the luxury travel magazine voted Regent hotels from China to the Caribbean among the luxury hotels and resorts in the world. All five of Regent’s managed hotels were included, marking a 100% success rate.
    “It is an honour to have all of our hotels included in Condé Nast Traveler’s exclusive issue,” commented Ralf Ohletz, President of Regent Hotels & Resorts. “Regent is dedicated to providing world-class accommodations and service. We are thrilled to be included in such a prestigious poll.”

    In the World’s Best Awards issue, the 195-room Regent Berlin is named the Number 3 hotel in all of Northern Europe, with the added distinction of being ranked among the top 100 hotels and resorts worldwide. The Regent Beijing and Regent Taipei are both included in the top 25 Asia hotels.     FIH Regent Group succeeded over 20 other bidders for the brand including some of the world’s leading luxury hotel groups and developers, during 6 months of intensive competition. FIH Regent Group prevailed because it has a long history with the Regent as the original owner of the Regent Taipei. The hotel was conceptualized by Regent Founder Robert Burns and stylized after the iconic Regent Hong Kong. FIH Regent Group has grown to become a leading luxury hotel group in greater China, with its flagship Regent Taipei consistently the most profitable Regent hotel in the world.

    In the company’s golden years of the 1980s and 1990s, Regent properties were among some of the world’s best hotels and included the iconic Regent Hong Kong and Regent Beverly Wilshire. Properties under development in New York, Bali, Milan, and Istanbul were later opened as Four Seasons when the brand was sold to Four Seasons, and then later to Carlson.

    The new Regent Chairman Steven Pan is setting out to restore the brand to its former glory with the same global mix of leadership directly linked to the original Regent DNA. He invited founder Robert Burns to return as Honorary Chairman to serve as the brand’s guiding light. He then appointed Ralf Ohletz as President, who has worked with Regent co-founder Adrian Zecha for 25 years creating some of the world’s most groundbreaking hotels such as the Sukhothai Bangkok and The Setai in Miami.

    Burns is a native of New York and has spent six decades in the hotel industry. He began his career in the late 1940s at the Waldorf-Astoria while attending New York University. In 1970, he founded Regent International Hotels in Hong Kong along with Adrian Zecha and Georg Rafael. Over 22 years, the group opened 17 luxury hotels in key locations around the world. The flagship of the portfolio was The Regent Hong Kong. Burns sold his interest in Regent to Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts in 1992.

    Ohletz is a native of Germany where he attended the School of Hotel Administration in Heidelberg. He later attended the Cornell School of Hotel Administration before launching his career at the London Hilton. He subsequently worked at some of the world’s leading hotels including: The Oriental Singapore, The Mandarin Hong Kong and The Pierre in New York. He began a long collaboration with Zecha as part of the development team for Beaufort Hotels. In 1992, Ohletz once again joined Zecha at GHM Hotels where he was responsible for such admired luxury hotels as The Datai, Langkawi; The Chedi, Muscat; The Legian, Bali and The Setai; Miami.

    The new Regent development focus will be partnering only with the very top developers and owners, creating bespoke mixed use properties and ensuring pride of ownership. “As we bring Regent back home to Asia,” said Pan, “expansion in Asia is a natural for us, and China will play a critical role as a rapidly growing economic superpower.”

    Regent also looks to return to gateway cities such as Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles, London and Shanghai in addition to its current pipeline projects in Abu Dhabi, Bali, Bangkok, Doha, Dubrovnik, Gurgaon, Kuala Lumpur, Maldives, Phuket, and Puerto Rico.

    REGENT HOTELS & RESORTS Past, Present and Future

    Regent is an iconic name in the global hospitality industry. Born in Asia in the 1970s, it became the world’s most admired hotel brand and for many years set the benchmark for luxury hotels worldwide.

    The brand was started by legendary hotelier Robert H Burns as a joint venture with Japan’s Tokyu Group in 1970. Mr. Burns became chairman and CEO of the group and was joined in the early years by industry leaders George Rafael and Adrian Zecha (who later founded Amanresorts).

    Together with Zecha and Rafael, Burns developed and expanded the Regent brand to become the first truly Asia-based global hospitality group in an industry previously dominated by European and American brands. Regent injected high-quality Asian hospitality standards into all their hotels worldwide.

    From 1970 to 1979, the company managed a number of prominent hotels globally, but it was with the opening of the flagship Regent Hong Kong in 1981 that it became a pre-eminent brand worldwide.

    With a prime location on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and a spectacular grandstand view of Hong Kong Island, Regent Hong Kong quickly became the world’s most admired hotel. Synonymous with impeccable service, the hotel was consistently honoured with prestigious awards and spawned a series of similarly elegant and luxurious Regent hotels in iconic destinations around the world.

    The Regent Hong Kong was also the first hotel to introduce the five-fixture bathroom. Burns, together with Zecha and George Rafael, realised that when business travellers stay at a hotel, the place they spend most of their time apart from the bed is the bathroom. So they decided to enlarge the bathroom and divide it into wet and dry sections, and separate the shower from the bathtub. This seemingly simple idea was new at the time and has since become standard for five star hotels.

    Besides practical innovation, Regent Hotels became synonymous with glamour and style, and became playgrounds for celebrities and international sophisticates.

    In the golden years of the 1980s and 1990s, the Regent Hotels & Resorts group opened 17 hotels over 22 years, including the celebrated Regent Beverly Wilshire. Originally built in 1928, it was bought and magnificently restored in 1985 to its rightful place at the centre of Los Angeles’ vibrant social scene. The hotel was also selected as the setting for one of the most successful movies of all time: “Pretty Woman,” starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.

    Other Regent highlights included the magnificent Regent New York (now The Four Seasons New York) which was built in 1991 and became the new benchmark for luxury hotels in New York, and the Regent Bali (now the Four Seasons Bali), which was built in 1992 on a spectacular hilltop setting overlooking Jimbaran Bay. This Bali resort was the first where each “room” was its own separate villa with a private pool, which again set new standards that became in time the norm for the very top of the luxury resort market.

    In 1992, the Regent brand was acquired by Four Seasons and merged under the Four Seasons Group. Many of the original Regent hotels, such as The Regent New York and The Regent Bali, then re-branded to Four Seasons.

    In 1997, Regent again changed hands, and was acquired by the privately-owned Carlson Hospitality Group. During this period, Carlson also integrated its luxury cruise line under the Regent brand and launched Regent Seven Seas Cruises, bringing Regent’s elevated standards of service to the cruise industry.

    In 2010, Regent returned to its Asian roots, with an acquisition by FIH Regent Group, the largest and most profitable hotel company listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

    FIH Regent Group has historic connections with the Regent brand; FIH Regent Group is the original owner of the Regent Taipei, which has consistently ranked the leading hotel in Taipei.

    Steven Pan, Chairman of FIH Regent Group, noted that his family’s long association with the brand provided him with a unique understanding of its origins, and a commitment to the exceptional service and understated elegance that Regent represents.

    “We were here when Regent’s founders brought their concepts and values to life, and we have nurtured those traditions in our hotel,” he commented.

    Pan has bold plans to return the brand to its iconic status. He invited the original founder Robert H Burns as Honorary Chairman to serve as the brand’s guiding light. He also appointed global luxury hotelier Ralf Ohletz President of the Regent brand. Ohletz’ visionary industry experience includes collaborating with another original Regent founder, Adrian Zecha, to develop some of the world’s most innovative hotel and resort concepts over the past 20 years.

    “Regent was born in Asia, has strong brand recognition in Asia, and is now coming home to Asia,” added Mr Pan.

    Expansion in Greater China, through both acquisition and management in partnership with leading developers, is a key to his ambitious plans – with the international cities of Shanghai and Hong Kong and the leading resort destination of Hainan among the top targets.

    Also on the Regent radar are major global gateway cities such as New York, Paris and London.

    “We will return to the gateway cities of the world,” said Mr. Pan. “We are well positioned to bring a great brand opportunity to the hotel investment community.

    Pan’s concept is for Regent is to create grand hotels, bespoke, often with mixed-use developments including signature restaurants and spas, along with luxury residential developments and extensive retail spaces.

    “The original Regent concept was based on perfecting the art of ‘the 3 B’s’ - bed, bath and breakfast. Now we are adding a fourth ‘B’ to the equation: bespoke” said Pan.

    Six Regent hotels currently in operation are located in Beijing, Singapore, Berlin, Zagreb, Turks & Caicos and Taipei.

    Pipeline hotel projects are under development in Abu Dhabi, Bali, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Montenegro and Phuket.

    Regent to Open Luxury Hotel in Montenegro in 2014
    Superyacht Marina Village of Shops, Residences and Restaurants to Feature New Waterfront Hotel

    TAIPEI, TAIWAN – February 6, 2012 – Regent Hotels & Resorts announces the signing of an agreement with Adriatic Marinas d.o.o to manage the Regent Porto Montenegro. The luxury, waterfront hotel is scheduled to open in (May) 2014, and will further evidence Regent’s strategy to offer bespoke communities to visitors. Originally an Austro-Hungarian naval base, Porto Montenegro has become an illustrious destination for tourists, yacht owners and celebrities.

    Located directly in Porto Montenegro marina in the Bay of Kotor, the 80-room hotel will offer thirty-five guestrooms and forty-five suites with interiors designed by Pisano Atelier. London-based ReardonSmith Architects, the recent recipients of four European Hotel Design Awards, are designing the hotel exterior in a Renaissance Venetian style, complete with a terracotta roof, inspired by Venetian aesthetics and drawing on the countless Italianate palazzi around the Bay.

    The Regent Porto Montenegro will feature a ground-floor café and brasserie, fine dining restaurant and cigar lounge, meeting facilities, a signature Regent Spa and two spectacular swimming pools. A central atrium with expansive views of the sea and surrounding mountains will lead to a tranquil water garden connected to a private island for exclusive events and dining.

    While guests at the Regent Porto Montenegro will be able to enjoy the luxury amenities at the hotel, they will also have full access to Porto Montenegro. The world-class marina features 184 boat berths, a lively village centre with casual cafes, fine-dining restaurants and upscale retail stores offering both local and international designer brands. Village amenities include a day spa, hair salon, yacht club and nautical museum.     Regent Hotels and Resorts (RHR), wholly owned by Formosa International Hotels Corporation (FIH), has signed a long-term Strategic Alliance Agreement for the Regent brand with Rezidor Hotel Group AB, one of the fastest growing hotel groups worldwide. Effective immediately, Rezidor will exclusively develop and operate Regent hotels in Russia/CIS, Baltics, Middle East and Africa; and jointly with RHR develop and operate new Regent hotels in the rest of Europe. RHR will continue operating existing Regent hotels in Europe. “We are honored to partner with Mr. Kurt Ritter and his team at Rezidor; the leading hotel operator in the EMEA region with special insight and experience with the Regent brand. Our cooperation will further strengthen our growth strategy while RHR continues to focus on luxury hotel residential mixed use projects in the region. After a month of soft opening days, Silks Palace, the much-anticipated BOT project conducted by FIH Regent Group, had its official Grand Opening ceremony on June 25, on which day a unique nine-course Imperial Treasures Feast featuring dishes resembling items from National Palace Museum’s signature collections was also introduced to give guests a better understanding of the close relationship between Chinese art and cooking.
